Acai Fruit

If you haven’t seen acai berry in the store yet, you can expect to see it very soon in a grocery or health food store near you. Acai is a palm that is native to the rain forests of South America, particularly Brazil and has been used for centuries as a large portion of the native diet. It was only recently that the benefits of acai fruit were really studied and understood by the West, however it confirmed the reason why the natives were so healthy. Acai fruit has several beneficial nutrients that can not only help to ward off disease and aging, but can also bring the vitality and energy that only a natural food can provide.

The acai fruit is harvested from the tall acai rainforest palms that grow in the watery swamps and flood plains. The shape and appearance of the acai fruit resembles that of a blueberry or grape, however the consistency is much different. The skin of the acai berry is actually relatively firm and it is the pulp that provides much of the benefit of the fruit, rather than the contents inside. The pulp is usually scraped from the rind in a manner that allows most of the nutrients to be removed without losing any flavor or substance and can be served in a variety of ways. The natives of the region use the pulp as a dish on its own, however they also mix it into juices and other food recipes.

One of the great things about the acai fruit is that it can easily be made into a delicious smoothie for consumption on the go and has been said to taste like a mix between chocolate and raspberry. It is packed full of healthy antioxidants that are capable of fighting free radicals, which are responsible for diseases and the aging process. Free radicals essentially break down your body’s cells through a series of attacks and over time, your body wears down from fighting them. Antioxidants are nature’s way of fighting back and the acai fruit contains more power than pomegranate and green tea combined.

You Can Find The Acai Fruit in a Number of Different Forms, Such as:

  • Plain - It's often hard to come by, but you can find plain acai fruit at some select health stores.
  • Juice - Many people absolutely love the taste of acai fruit juice.
  • Supplement - If the flavor isn't your thing, you can take a supplement form and still get all the benefits.
  • Dish - You can take plain acai berry and create any dish you want with it.

The actual fruit is about the size of a blueberry or a grape, which is interesting considering the amount of nutrients that are packed into a single berry. In just one acai berry, you will find almost of all your recommended daily dose of Vitamin C, along with a host of phytochemicals that provide energy and speed up your metabolism. Because of the nutrients and the high fiber content, acai has been linked to weight loss and has become a very popular supplement in that regard.

The acai fruit, although only discovered recently, has quickly become a valuable source of nutrients and antioxidants that blow every other fruit out of the water. Although acai palms are native to the rainforests of South America, there are several ways to import it that do not damage its ability to aid the body’s natural disease and illness fighting processes. I highly recommend giving acai a try as part of your daily routine. You can find several varieties of the fruit online or in local health food stores.
